This was the first time that space travel had been so richly and convincingly proposed to the general public and it served as a catalyst to roll forward the proposition into a reality a decade later.
The Mission
The Colliers story "Man will conquer space soon" appeared in 1952 and ran as a series through to 1954. Collier's was an American weekly magazine that contained articles of general interest and was considered the pioneer of investigative journalism. The Series was a combined effort, leading researchers, writers and
artists were assembled to put across an in depth outline of what
would be needed to get mankind into space. Much of the groundwork had
been laid by rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun, who had earlier
published a book detailing an exploratory mission to Mars, and it was
his ideas and designs that underpinned the series.
